The RISSA Special Awards Committee has selected Anthony Antosh, Director of the Paul Sherlock Center on Disabilities as the recipient of the 2012 Paul Crowley Award. The PAUL CROWLEY AWARD is given each year by the Rhode Island School Superintendents’ Association to a Rhode Island citizen who, in his or her professional and/or personal capacity, has demonstrated a long-standing commitment to improving the quality of education for the children of Rhode Island with the same zeal and perseverance as Representative Paul Crowley did throughout his career as a state representative.

Tony Antosh has been a strong, positive voice in education for more than 35 years. He gained initial prominence with his work on behalf of those with disabilities, from leading the effort to close the Ladd Center and move disabled adults into the community to similar work throughout the state moving students with disabilities into regular classroom environments. This included not only teaching professionals, but working directly with school districts in acquiring the capacity to move this effort forward.

More recently his impact has expanded to all schools and all students. He is the energy behind Rhode Island’s implementation of PBIS – Positive Behavioral Supports, a school-wide effort to improve the learning environment and support improved academic performance. PBIS is now in over 100 Rhode Island schools and shows strong positive impact, most profoundly in our schools that struggle the most. Tony is a nationally recognized PBIS leader and often volunteers his personal time to help schools get their implementation started.

Most importantly, Tony Antosh has had a strong, positive influence on education in Rhode Island. His impact is felt at every level, but, most strongly and importantly, at the classroom and student level, where his belief in the fundamental importance of teachers has focused his work with aspiring and current professional throughout the state.

Tony will receive the Award at a ceremony in the State Room at the RI State House on Wednesday, March 7. He will also have the opportunity to award a $1,000 scholarship to a senior pursuing a career in education and graduating from a public high school chosen by Mr. Antosh.
